The Chase Family

The Chase family arrived in the Buxton settlement in the year 1859. Prior to the family’s arrival in Buxton, they lived on the Raleigh side of the Thames River; the family consisted of five children growing up on the Thames. George Chase, the patriarch of the Buxton Chase family married Elizabeth Prince from South Carolina. A fairly wealthy man of colour named Perry Chase, who had been born in Maryland, was living in the area at the time. It is possible that George Chase was a part of that same family.  George and Elizabeth’s first child William Henry was born along the Thames River. However, after the birth of William the family relocated to the Buxton Settlement and lived on the eighth concession. Descendants of George and Elizabeth Chase continue to live in the area.
