INTRO TO ELGIN SETTLEMENT ... ELGIN SETTLEMENT ... NORTH BUXTON ... PEOPLE OF BUXTON

George Chase Sr.
An Original Settler

George Chase was the youngest of six children, who initially settled along the Thames River. A published author documented in 1907 a wealthy, elderly "Perry Chase, born in Maryland", who is believed to be George's oldest brother. George married Elizabeth Prince, daughter of Frances Rouse and Sylvanius Prince. The Elgin Association records of Rev. King name George N. Chase from Woodstock as an investor in 1850. George purchased land on the Eighth Concession, paying the first four installments in a lump sum, demonstrating his wealth. The 1851 Chatham City census lists "George N. Chase, labourer, born US, age 23, religion Methodist" and "Elizabeth Chase, born US, age 22, religion Methodist". George and Elizabeth had eight children (William Henry, Levina (or spelled Alvina), Mary, Lucy, Harriet, Arthur, Richard & Prince). When George Chase passed away or where he was buried is unknown.
