George Bolivar Shreve
Early Settler of Buxton

George Bolivar ShreveGeorge Shreve was born in Pennsylvania, in 1820 and was raised by Quakers. George married Elizabeth Shadd, the daughter of Harriet (Parnell) and Abraham Doras Shadd Between 1848-1850, he served as the first Grand Master of the first Grand Lodge of New Jersey.

In 1851, George authorized the formation of a Black Masonic Lodge in Canada.

George, his wife and their children (Felix, Victor, Harriet, Abraham, Joseph, Esther, George, John, Emma, William & Amelia) made the journey to Canada West, with the Shadd's and other families. Initially, George and his family lived on land owned by his father in-law.

Eventually, they moved to their own land on the Fifth Concession, known as Raleigh Plains. George donated an acre of land for the founding of School Section # 4 Raleigh, of which he was appointed a Trustee. George was widowed in 1890 with the death of Elizabeth. He remarried Mrs. Nall, a school teacher. George Shreve died on January 15, 1896.

To this day, there are descendents of George Bolivar Shreve in Buxton and local communities.
