The Brooks Family

Born a slave on a plantation in Halifax County North Carolina, John Brooks married a slave named Lucy on the same plantation. Some of John and Lucy’s eight children were born in slavery. They made their way to the Buxton Settlement by 1858. The circumstances of their relocation to Canada West are unknown. Two sons, Kincheon and Benjamin served in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War.

Descendents of John Brooks and his family still reside in Buxton today.
