Prominent historical
figure whose acomplishments include, conductor on the Underground Railroad at his homes
(stations) in both Deleware and Pennsylvania; In 1833, elected President of the National
Convention for the Improvement of Free People of Colour and in the same year, active
participant in the founding of the American Anti Slavery Society. In 1851, he came to and
settled in the North Buxton area where he continued to be active in the Anti-Slavery
Movement. He was the first coloured to be elected to a political office as Counsellor of
Raleigh Township. In 1994, the road that traverses the heart of North Buxton was so named
A. D. Shadd Road in his honour. This drawing which was taken from a photograph is by Ellen
